Demographics in Yukon - The population today is over 24,000 within a 26 square mile radius. Women out number men by about 4%, so gentlemen should have no trouble finding a date for Saturday night! Yukon was voted "Best Affordable Suburb" in the Business Weekly, 2009. The strength of our local economy, short commutes, clean air, low crime, good weather, quality schools, income level and location were cited as our outstanding attributes. Sales Tax as of 2009 was only 4.00% and the city has about an 11% growth rate. Public Works within the city contribute to the beauty of Yukon and are hard at work to maintain the already excellent quality of life. Yukon attractions are plentiful. Yukon Business Development - If your interested in the business end of Yukon Oklahoma, you need only look towards the Economic Development side of the City of Yukon. they can show you growing business and retail sites available throughout the city. As the town itself grows, so does the need for professional office locations, senior communities such as the Legacy Lakes gated community, and the new development of the Commons of Yukon with plenty of new office space. The Cedar Ridge Office park has executive suites and easy access to the Interstate 40. Yukon also has prestine areas for retail space located off of Garth Brooks Blvd and the I-40. With Wal-Mart as its base, The Yukon Shopping Center is well on its way to topping out with many smaller retailers grabbing up the few spots that are left in the development.
Yukon History -Yukon Oklahoma was so named in 1891 by the Spencer Brother´s who bought the land and considered that the town would bring them much luck. So they named the town Yukon after
the Yukon Gold Rush in Canada hoping for the Golden Promise the small town could, and indeed did grow into. The word Yukon is from the French Canadian native tongue of the Loucheux meaning Great River. The North Canadian River runs directly through Yukon. The Canadian County were most likely so named from the early French Traders who past through Yukon on their way to New Orleans and the Mississippi.
Officially nicknamed the Czech Capital of Oklahoma due to the large number of citizens with a Czechoslovakian heritage, Czech´s were able to acquire jobs on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad which was just coming through and distributing mainly wheat from the soil rich Yukon and other small towns on its way to Arkansas. So popular is the Czech heritage that every autumn they have a festival in their honor! Canadian County has the third largest concentration of Czechoslovakian heritage. The early Czechs were very religious and established many Catholic parishes in the area. The oldest, still standing is St. John Nepomuk which was built in 1894.
The city of Yukon was incorporated in 1891 but did not get water or electricity until 1910. Slow start but still growing strong!
Yukon Government - Yukon Real Estate today is separated into Wards 1 through 4 with the residents voting on a counsel person to represent each as well as one other councilman at large. The Mayor and council hold monthly meetings working on community development and future planning for the town. Most residents work in Oklahoma City which makes their commute time an easy 25 minutes. The Yukon School District - has received many honors for the test scores and student teacher ratio of 19:1. The district website has a map of the school boundaries that will help you with your child´s specific school. Each School has their own website you can browse to see the latest activities and calendar for each school. Another unique part of the Yukon school district is the Yukon Student Coffee House. Open until 9PM on weekdays and 11:30PM on Friday and Saturday nights gives the children both older and younger a safe place to play video games, group games or just hang.
