Understanding Oklahoma City means you have to start with it´s very intricate past. From the times of the Great Land Rush to its heart wrenching tragedies, Oklahoma City is strong in spirit and deep in pride.Oklahoma City History - Nicknamed the Sooner State years after the meaning had been almost lost. It was derived from the Sooner Clause in the Indian Appropriation Act of 1889. Sooners were usually law men, deputy marshals, land surveyors, railroad men who had access to land in Oklahoma that was being handed out for free, However as with everything else there were rules to getting this free land. Sooners usually arrived the night before and hid in ditches and such and as the race started they would pop up and claim the land they had been sitting on over night. In 1908 the University of Oklahoma adopted the name and the State itself was known as the Sooner State mostly with pride.
Today in Oklahoma City - Oklahoma City's pride in its heritage is demonstrated by its revitalized downtown, including the Ford Center, Civic Center Music Hall and AT&T Bricktown Park. As of April, 2010 Oklahoma City has an enormous make over planned. Project 180 is a three year plan to
transform the area. Upon completion the downtown area of Oklahoma City will be even more visitor friendly, additional parking, bike lanes and a complete overhaul of the downtown streets and pedistrian walkways. Also included in the make over is the Myriad Botanical Gardens with a new kids discovery garden, a grand performance lawn and an ice skating rink. With this grand scheme The Gardens will be closed for approximately one year. The last phase of work for Project 180 is scheduled for completion in 2012 and includes NW 4th Street, Robert S. Kerr, West Main Street, Broadway, Harvey and North Walker. This phase will include the renovation of Bicentennial Park, located in front of the Civic Center Music Hall.The Oklahoma City population is 537,734 of that 14% are African American and 14% are Latino, the percentage of American Indians is about 3% as of 2006. Median household income is around $40,000 as of 2006.Education and Health care make up the highest portion of working individuals in Oklahoma City with construction manufacturing, entertainment and retail supplying the bulk of blue collar jobs. Forbes has listed Devon Energy and OGE Energy as two of the "Best Big Companies" in the Oklahoma City area. Temperatures in the mid 40´s in Jan and the mid 80's and 90´s in August. Rainfall can peak in June and then again in October right before the winter sets in. Snowfall may be anywhere from Thanksgiving to early Spring in Oklahoma City and the average is about 9 inches of snow annually.
What does median vs. average mean anyway? Median is the value set in the middle of a list of numbers set from Low to High. So when you see a median amount, you can figure half of the other numbers are higher and half of the other numbers are lower. To find out the actual average you must take all the numbers added and divide by the total numbers. The median number is much more useful when dealing with extremely higher or lower numbers on one side or the other. For instance, in this set of numbers 1,2,3,7,9,10,1000 the average number is 147 but a clearer picture is seen when you look at the median amount which would be 7.
Oklahoma City Public Schools had in the 2005-2006 school year 37,216 students ranging in grades from Pre-Kindergarten to grade 12. Also "student to teacher ratios from Elementary to High School average 18 kids per every teacher."The graduation percentage is a whopping 93%.
The public schools in Oklahoma City encompass 136 square miles. The Public school system just had a major breakthrough with the passing of the Bond Initiative. Also in 2007, the district surpassed all the Federal Progress Requirements. The children who were marginal have improved dramatically and the district feels it is continuing on the right path for the children.
