Edmond Demographics - The city of Edmond Oklahoma has approximately 75,000 residents to date. But the city and local organizations work as if they are a big metropolitan community! The caring, volunteering, events and cultural arts programs of Edmond´s high quality are often only found in communities with much bigger populations. The City Sales Tax is 7.75%. Of that, 3.25% goes back to the City of Edmond for park maintenance, streets, capital projects etc. The sales tax Edmond equals 65% of their total General Fund income for the city.

Edmond is also home to man made bodies of water such as Arcadia Lake which was built and opened in 1987 by the City and the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Lake is 1820 acres and 26 miles of shoreline. The dam that produced the lake is almost a mile in length. Arcadia Lake offers many water activities for the general public as well as new homeowners.
 
History of Edmond OK - Washington Irving, famous writer of stories such as Rip Van Winkle, past through Edmond Oklahoma and included the enchanting area in his 1835 account of his travels in "A Tour on the Prairies".

Edmond was widely dominated by ranchers and farming throughout the 1900´s. Because the area of Edmond was the highest point on the Santa Fe Railways between Kansas City and Galveston Texas and Mile 103 was named the Summit. In 1887 however an official request came down from the government to rename it Edmond, Oklahoma. It was here that the big steam engines would stop for water and fuel daily as well as an excellent spot for passenger nourishment. Even today, Edmond is considered an important dining and shopping arena.

The famous Oklahoma Land Grab of 1889 began at 12:00 Noon and a mere hour and twenty minutes later the likes of Colonel EB Townsend, HC Angelea, and JW Turner had arrived in Edmond. Edmond was started by determined men racing 15 miles east of Edmond to settle and provide for their families in the new frontier.

The small and mighty town of Edmond later produced the very first public school house in Oklahoma, the first grocery store built in a cloth tent, the first newspaper called the Edmond Sun, the first catholic church, library and higher education(now called the University of Central Oklahoma. Talk about exciting beginnings, no grass was growing under these settlers!

As the early settlers indicated, there was much to do then and there is still much to do today.  However the "doings" have much more to do with fun and enjoyment. Talking to the Edmond locals, you will find there is always something planned to do. Finding your way around Edmond is also quite easy and one of the more convenient ways locals get around town is by way of  "The Eddy" or the
Edmond Trolley. Everyone from students to senior citizens can ride the Trolley daily, from one end of town to the other.

There are many outdoor activities in the local parks, and the summer months in Edmond will have you attending summer stock at Mitch Park Outdoor Amphitheater. Edmond is also known for its local outdoor public art. The city of Edmond has many commissioned art that can be found in front of just about every city building. You can also find artwork in beautifully landscaped front yards of enthusiastic residents.

Entertainment and Recreation in Edmond - The picturesque and nostalgic atmosphere of the downtown area begins at 2nd street North to Thatcher. The Edmond Downtown Association, comprised of about 50 downtown commerce owners has made a dynamic difference in the well maintained downtown area as well as sponsoring events and clean ups. Downtown Edmond has several unique restaurants accommodating just about every taste you could hungry for. From socks to handmade soaps Edmond has many shopping areas situated all over town. Big Box and small privately owned shoppes are conveniently located in Edmond.

A recent survey in the Edmond area shows over half of the Edmond residents stay in town to shop as opposed to going to the bigger towns such as Oklahoma City. From Kelly West at Edmond Road and Kelly Street to the newest addition, Spring Creek at 15th and Bryant, you´re sure to find what you´re looking for. Groundbreaking will begin the spring of 2008 for a 13 screen complex which will include a 500 seating IMAX Theater. The entire shopping and entertainment center should be completed by 2009. More to Edmond then entertainment is the Edmond Arts and Humanities Organization keeping a great cultural and artistic feel to Edmond. Not only do they offer fine exhibits and classes for young and old, but they are also involved with a terrific networking volunteer group that helps with meetings, events and school programs. The local Edmond Fourth of July Festival is annually held in Edmond and is one of the bigger events for the city.
