Bethany is located in between Oklahoma City and Yukon/Mustang, completing a kind of triangle around Yukon and Mustang. Closer to Oklahoma City then Mustang or Yukon, Bethany is eleven miles from the metropolitan community. Bethany is also along Route 66 and in the 1950´s was known as the stretch of Rte 66 where cigarettes and gasoline were not sold on Sundays. The town presently consists of 5.2 square miles. There have been some interesting happenings around Bethany, the OK News reports a small earthquake on Friday February 15, 2008. It was a 2.5 shaker and locals are humorously blaming it on the influx of Californians coming to Oklahoma. But seriously we know there are shifting plates across the whole of the United States and tiny quakes are happening all the time.
As I am writing this, February 19, 2008, Boeing is waiting for the final results of bids offered up by the United States Air Force regarding a contract to build the KC-X Tanker which will replace the KC-135. The contract will support jobs across Oklahoma City for years! This will be the first tanker built in 25 years for the Air Force. Everyone is holding their breath. Stay Tuned!
NO SMOKING in all public places. Business owners have until 2013 to comply. Having been to California, there is nothing like walking into a restaurant and no longer smelling nasty cigars! We are sure the waitress and other employees will be grateful. Now if they can only convince the casinos in Las Vegas, they are working on it!Bethany sits between Lake Overholser which is just off Highway 66. Lake Overholser has plenty of fishing and many have boats tide up at the docks. There are Tennis courts along the 7 miles of shoreline and although swimming is prohibited, picnicking, nature trails and a soccer field more then make up for it.
Bethany Broncos and has a high school, middle school and the Earl Harris Elementary School.
The elementary school has 678 students enrolled for the 2007-2008 school year with over 400 volunteer hours scheduled. That says tons about the devotion of parents and teachers to the youth of Bethany. The school also highlights health and physical activity with the students. A 5K run is currently scheduled for March 2008 and proceeds are donated to the Oklahoma Medical Research foundation.
Thirty years later, in 1889, the US Government added sections of land that included Bethany as a sawmill and good source of timber for Fort Reno close by. This was the same year the Unassigned Lands were opened up. All but the timber grove. However the government allowed settlers to come and pick up timber that was already down on the ground for fuel. The Rock Island Railroad reduced the need for the timber in the area and Bethany was included in the first land run in Oklahoma, in 1889.
If you think real estate prices have climbed in recent history, think of 1899 when Mr. Turner purchased the southwest portion of Bethany for 5.00 and acres and the next day paid 6.05 for forty more acres. And a Mr. Hafer purchased 120 acres at $9.00 and $15.50 for another 40 acres!
The high school consistently scores above the state and national average for the ACT test. They currently have 408 students enrolled in the 9 - 12 grades. Classes include the latest technology in computers with enrollment of the popular FrontPage software class.

The middle school currently has 356 students for the 2007-2008 school years. Oklahoma County has the open transfer rules so about 65% of the students are from surrounding districts. Children in grades 6th through 8th grade have free after school tutoring available as well as a Homework Hotline.

Grants are awarded to teachers from funds collected from the general public and corporations in the area.
The adults and children alike are excited to hear the Oklahoma City Philharmonic is coming to visit in February of 2008.
Also in Bethany is Wiley Post Airport which caters to commercial, public and business travelers. Wiley is also home to corporate jets and single engine planes alike.

The college, Southern Nazarene University is located on NW 39th Street and the Children´s Center is down the street. Early on the town was religious as seen by the Blue Laws in affect which prohibited alcohol and gasoline being sold on Sundays. However these laws are no longer effective even though people ask if your business is open on Sundays.
